NORTHUMBERLAND-based pharmaceutical company, SCM Pharma, has restructured its senior management team by appointing Shirley Dann as its new managing director to spearhead its expansion.
Shirley, who has relocated to the North-East, has been promoted from her role as business development director to head-up the specialist manufacturing company, taking on the responsibility of improving operational efficiency and driving growth.
A qualified Pharmacist with 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Shirley has previously held senior management positions in production, product development and quality.
The restructure will see owners Fiona Cruickshank and Brian Dougherty, who recently sold The Specials Laboratory for £20.1 million, take on more strategic roles in the business.
The duo, who will both remain owners and directors of the business, will concentrate on the global expansion of SCM Pharma, focusing on the vision for the business and breaking into new markets.
SCM Pharma, which has two sites in Prudhoe and Stocksfield, offers a vast array of bespoke contract outsourced solutions, including sterile and non sterile manufacturing, development and packaging, for the entire drug development market.
Fiona Cruickshank, co-owner and director at SCM Pharma, said: "We are delighted Shirley has decided to take on the role of managing director. Aside from her outstanding experience, she has already played a huge role in the growth of the business since 2004 and will no doubt play an even bigger role in the company’s ongoing and future expansion.
"Knowing that SCM Pharma is in a safe pair of hands from a day-to-day operational perspective will allow Brian and I to focus our efforts on capitalising the high growth opportunities presented by the global pharmaceutical, bio and healthcare markets" added Fiona.
SCM Pharma is a leading light in the region’s burgeoning science and technology sector. The company prides itself on its revolutionary approach to clinical manufacturing by offering companies of all sizes the opportunity to use its specialist expertise to develop and trial drugs, ultimately seeing them through to commercialistaion.
Commenting on her new role, Shirley Dann, managing director at SCM Pharma, said:
"I am very proud of what this business has achieved in just four-and-a-half years and am very excited by the prospect of guiding the company into the next stage of its development.
"We have firmly established the business as a centre for excellence for technical and quality expertise, giving it the foundation to take advantage of the growing global outsourced pharmaceutical sector. Having such specific skills and capabilities in this type of specialist manufacturing, positions us well to exploit the significant opportunities presented by the market" added Shirley.

It provides a wide range of small-medium scale development and testing services, along with technical and quality consultancy to meet its clients’ clinical trial and commercial needs.
